My Hero, Myself

We all have that person we look up to who embodies our very own craving for our idealistic selves. That person we consider our idols, our saviours, and our heroes.
Be it Barrack Obama or you, we all have our heroes. So it wouldn’t be a surprise if I shared who mine was, right? Try and guess who it is; is it my mom, dad or brother? – WRONG. My hero is Mak, my alter ego. He is confident, multi-talented and kind. He embodies the kind of person I want to be – a person who is well-rounded and well-known. Mak will one day be the President of our country, and he’ll probably be the best of his time yet. He is destined for a great many things and he doesn’t lay around waiting for all of them to happen, instead, he always goes out and makes sure that his destinies do happen. He believes that everyone is born with “it.” He says that everyone just doesn’t realize that they do have the “it” and that they only need to develop their “it.” According to him, the most important thing that will make him a success is his belief in his self, not others.
Believe in yourself! Have faith in your abilities! Without a humble but reasonable confidence in your own powers you cannot be successful or happy. Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no one's definition of your life; define yourself. You're just left with yourself all the time, whatever you do anyway. You've got to get down to your own God in your own temple. It's all down to you, mate.

Explaining this Year's Buwan ng Wika: Tatag ng Wikang Filipino, Lakas ng Pagka-pilipino

When I found out that this year’s theme on the Buwan ng Wika was “Tatag ng Wikang Filipino, Lakas ng Pagka-pilipino,” I was like, “HUH???” At first, I had some trouble absorbing what the phrase meant, and after about 30 minutes of thinking about it, without any luck, I gave up on trying to analyse what thoughts it tried to portray.
A few days went by and I had forgotten all about our Buwan ng Wika. I was coasting off of August in a breeze. Then I finally got bored and the question struck me again, “What had our theme this year meant?” So I began researching and I found out a lot.
We all know that every country’s treasure is their language… more of that stuff… blah blah blah. But let’s try to translate the theme literally – The Strength of the Filipino Language, The Power of the Filipino Race; makes much more sense, right? I think that the phrase speaks for itself now, and let me remind you, this is a perspective short after all. So think for yourself.

Perspective Short: My Last High School First Quarter

It is again the end of the first quarter in our school and I am somehow freaking disappointed in myself. I did not like my performance. I could have done better.
I made many mistakes this quarter. I did not take all my responsibilities seriously and it backfired on me. I’ve discovered that one single wrong move on my part could easily destroy me.
Most see me as this should-be-perfect-guy when I can never be perfect. As the laws of Physics dictates, nothing should be perfect in the universe. The idealism of perfectionism is therefore, non-existent. But still, the pressure of expectations has again begun building up on my back and it’s starting to get a bit heavy – heavier than ever before.
A ton of responsibilities is currently being grasped by my hands but it’s somehow multiplying inside. So, moving on, I will do my best again and again until I succeed.

As a wise man once said, “Fall seven times, stand up eight.”

Perspective Short: SONA 2012

As I sat in front of the TV and witnessed the SONA of our dearest president for myself, one thing instantly flashed to my mind; in less than a day, a ton of crap will have again risen on the faces of the internet about this year’s achievements and success. We mostly say that it is because we want to get our voices heard, that we want to help him improve, to inspire him, but are those truly our reasons? I honest-to-god did not like his entire speech too, but it doesn’t mean it was all bad; and, more importantly, it doesn’t mean that it was any less worthy of anything.

Whatever a person does, good or bad, a few always have something negative to say; be it verbal errors, diction or etc.
In my own view, the president did his best to make our country flourish. Try to remember that when P-noy got elected, our country was internationally known as one of the most corrupt countries in the world. Imagine starting raising a country starting from there? In mathematics, you would not only be starting at zero, but you’ll be starting at negative one.
Noynoy, of course, has made bad decisions too. Read my first blog for example. It was a letter for him. It was me wishfully thinking that the president would accidentally click on the URL of my blog. LOL
All in all, this blog focused more on you, my reader – your view on the SONA, not the SONA itself. As the title of my blog states, my posts are only perspective shorts. I focus more on the unprofessional aspects of things.

Vegetables: Why we need them

Rice and wheat contain much carbohydrate which is quite essential for energy. But more of rice and wheat and less of vegetables and fruit is not a balanced diet. Vegetables and fruit contain nutrients like vitamins, calcium, iron, phosphorus, folic acid, iodine, magnesium, zinc etc. Green leafy vegetables contain a lot of nutrients, especially calcium and iron. We should take one type of green leafy vegetable every day. Spinach is quite good for health.
The cereals such as Bengal- gram, beans, black-gram, horse-gram, maize, millet, raga, red- gram etc., contain much protein which is essential for our growth. Iron and calcium contribute to healthy bones. Asafetida relieves gas from the stomach. Urinal, cabbage, carrot and cluster-beans contain fibrous substance which gives a person relief from constipation. Cucumber, horse radish, lady’s finger, potato, tomato, snake-gourd etc. should find a place in our food items often. All the fruits are good for health. Many of us do not have the habit of eating fruit. This is very bad. Taking orange, apple, plantain, grapes etc. will keep us healthy.
It is a habit with youngsters to drink in summer cold drinks. Instead of cold drinks they may take coconut water, buttermilk or milk. There was a legal case some time ago against the manufacturers of the cold drinks. It was alleged that some cold drinks contain a little quantity of pesticide. A little pesticide is added to some cold drinks to give a kick to the persons who drink them. Fruit juices of any fruit like orange, apple, pineapple, pomegranate, grapes, tomato, lemon etc. are quite good for health.
If we change our food habits we can get rid of many diseases by getting the essential nutrients from the food we eat. Youngsters should learn the habit of taking enough vegetables and fruit.
In these days boys and girls like to have junk food now and then. Junk food is described in the dictionary as food of low nutritional value. Boys and girls eat fried chips, cheese balls, ice creams of different varieties, chocolate bars etc. Youngsters habitually eat these things which are not good for health. Eating chocolates often spoils the teeth, it is said. There was a lengthy article in a newspaper advising youngsters not to eat junk food and chocolates. The author of the article has advised the youngsters to eat fruit. In fact at least one kind of fruit should find a place in our food items daily.
Some boys and girls these days say they like only urinal, potato or drumstick. They should take all kinds of vegetables. It is said that the colour of the vegetables denotes their particular nutrient value. The violet or the green colour of urinal denotes a particular nutrient, the green colour of cluster-beans or snake-gourd denotes a particular nutrient. Youngsters should be advised to avoid junk food and take vegetables, fruit and nuts.’

A letter to the President of the Philippines…

Greetings Mr. President!
I currently reside at Vigan City and as of now, I am a fourth year student of Ilocos Sur National High School. But enough about me sir, let’s talk about you.
I always follow the news on what you do sir – on how you’re doing, your administration, and sometimes, even your love life. I have learned that in your administration, many have improved. The decisions you made were significant. But in my relative view, not all of them were significantly prolific and good. Although not bad, with all due respect sir, some of them were useless. Take for example the warships, which were only a few billions, we bought for the Spratly islands China claims to be theirs. With my infantile analysis sir, I ask you these: do you really think that a few warships can do anything overly significant if China suddenly decided they want a war against us; do you think that a few second-hand warships can win against the powerful armada of China; and do you think not many lives will be lost if a war arises even with other countries behind our backs? The answer: a whooping NO! NO! and YES!
The Philippines' one and only warship/
We complain so much about poverty being widespread because of natural and man-made disasters that occur when in fact, these aren't even true. Some say we lack funds? Then where do we get the money to buy the items of war? If all the money spent on war was spent on finding environmental answers, the cure for diseases and ending poverty, what a wonderful place our country would be.
I am only a student, yet I know that as long as we’re willing to try, we can.

A wise man once said, “Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies in the final sense a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.
